Yāhi (to go; to become; to wait) is CHOWK’s very first re-imagining of the Gita Govinda, the ancient poetry composed by 12th century poet Jayadeva. In this work, choreographer Raka Maitra pulls her focus away from the Pallavis (pure dance items) towards the Abhinayas (storytelling aspect) of the classical Odissi repertoire. The original poetry, music and choreography of the classical repertoire is re-contemplated through a new lens, shifting the focus of the poems to the emotional landscapes of the nayika (heroine) and her relationship with the self, the other and the environment; using the body as a whole, expressive medium. A meeting of live music and movement, this work brings forth new sensibilities which will draw you in through its subtle force.
